Patients queries and questions are always brainstorming activities for me. They keep me on my toes till i don’t satisfy them with the suitable answers. It is good that these queries help in choosing topics for my blogs because i am sure by this way the content helps the reader more.

One my reader is following diet of her dietician and has lost remarkable weight with the help of her diet. But the pattern of her diet is little unfriendly with her gut. She complains about the flatulence after she started the particular diet suggested by her dietician .

Her questions were, How can i cop up with this flatulence ? Are there any options or substitutions for salads?

Once return from work ,i feel hell hungry and want to munch on junks . What should be the appropriate food that i can munch on in evening time?

  • Answer 1:

The probable reason of the flatulence is the pattern of diet. Eating cubes of paneer(cottage cheese)(as told by her ) for lunch is little impractical and unacceptable  though it completes the calories, protein fat equation as per the diet rules. But if the same diet is to be continued then adding  ginger, lime, rock salt and luke warm water  in the meal can help to some extent to relive the flatulence (gases) and promoting the digestion. i still would suggest to revise the diet plan.

If your dietician is suggesting you salads, they should be salads only. Ayurveda has different approach on uncooked food or salads. the salads eaten in large quantity as a meal can increase load on digestion . Eating uncooked sprouts salads in large quantity and regularly can increase the indigestion, flatulence and also have an impact on bowel habits. Eating the salads regularly in small quantity is beneficial but eating them as your complete meal is wrong in some way. Use black pepper powder ,rock salt, cumin and dry ginger powder to enhance the digestion of salad and preventing the flatulence.

Yes the evening time especially for the Pitta dominant prakriti people is the time for “Fire in gut !Feed me”. Munching on Chivda, Bhel,Chips,another junks are strictly no no. If possible make it as your dinner time.Early dinner is anytime good. If not possible soups are the best options. Red pumpkin, Green lentils soups are advisable. Ready to make soups are not advised at all. Other than soups you can have butter milk and amaranths flakes (rajgira lahi). red rce flakes (salichya lahya) with milk or buttermilk are good alternative to junks.

Note: The diet should be planned according to the region, conditions of person,habits, body patterns and above all considering the person in the center and not keeping the calories as goal!

“आहाराची बाराखडी”

“आहारात् सर्वभूतानि संभवन्ति महीपते/ आहारेन् विवर्धन्ते तेन जीवन्ति जन्तवः//” (महाभारत)
आहार हा प्रत्यक्ष प्राणाचे धारण करणारा घटक आहे.आहारापासूनच मनुष्याची आणि इतर जीवांची उत्पत्ती होते,आहारामुळेच त्या जीवांची वाढ आणि पोषण होते तर आहारामुळेच(चुकीच्या) त्यांचा नाश होतो.

वेद,काव्य आणि पुराण लिखाणातून आहाराबाबाबत खूप मार्मिक दाखले वाचायला मिळतात.
आहाराबाबत काही साधे सोपे नियम मार्गदर्शन आहेत का? वैद्य लोक खोलात आहाराबद्दल ,पथ्याबद्दल सांगत असतातच. परंतु आहाराची बाराखडी काय असे एक पेशंट ने सहज विचारले. सर्वानाच त्यातून काहीतरी फायदा मिळेल म्हणून हि पोस्ट !

  1. सर्वदा मिताहारी असावे.मिताहार पाचक अग्नी प्रदीप्त करतो. (मिताहार याचा अर्थ पोटाला पुरेसा हलका आहार होय)
  2. आहार हा सहा रसांनी (गोड़,तिखट,कडू,खारट,आंबट,तुरट)युक्त असावा . फक्त गोड़ , फक्त तिखट असे एक रस प्रधान अन्न खाल्याने शरीराचे पोषण होत नाही.आहारात वैविध्य असावे ते याचकरता.
  3. अन्न जड असेल (उदा.मिष्टान्न,मांसाहार,इत्यादी)तर पोट अर्धे भरेस्तोवरच खावे.पचायला हलके अन्न देखील पोटात किंचित जागा ठेवून पोट भरेल एवढेच खावे .
  4. सहजपणे पचवता येईल इतका आहार म्हणजे आहाराची योग्य मात्रा आहे.पोटाचे चार भाग करून चवथा भाग रिकामा राहील एवढे अन्नसेवन हे आहारसेवनाचे योग्य प्रमाण होय.
  5. शरीराला हवे त्यापेक्षा कमी(उदा. अति उपास करणे, डाएट करणे इत्यादी)आहार घेतल्यास शरीराला बळ,तेज पुष्टी मिळत नाही तसेच वात दोष निर्माण होऊन वातव्याधी होऊ शकतात
  6. अति आहार सेवन केल्यास तर लगेच तिन्ही दोषांचा विशेषतः कफ दोषाचा प्रकोप होऊन अजीर्ण आणि पचनाचे विविध व्याधी उत्पन्न होतात.
  7. केवळ अति अन्न झाल्यानेच अजीर्ण इत्यादी आजार होतात असे नव्हे. न आवडणारे अन्न बळजबरी खाल्याने,करपलेले,वातूळ,खूप कोरडे,खूप थंड,शिळे, नासलेले अन्न देखील विविध विकार उत्पन्न करते.
    पूर्वी खाल्लेले अन्न पूर्ण पंचायच्या आत परत आहार घेऊ नये.
  8. पचायला जड ,गोड़ तसेच घट्ट किंवा कोरडे पदार्थ जेवण्याच्या सुरुवातीला खावे आणि त्यानंतर पचायला हलके, आंबट,मीठ घातलेले तसेच पातळ पदार्थ खावे. असा विशेष उल्लेख पचनाच्या दृष्टीने आयुर्वेदात आढळतो. प्रत्यक्षात मात्र आपण गोड़ पदार्थ भरपूर प्रमाणात आहाराच्या शेवटी खातो. त्यामुळे अन्न नीट न पचणे आणि तत्सम त्रास होतात.
  9. भोजनानंतर घटाघट पाणी पिऊ नये. भोजनामध्ये थोडे घोट घोट प्यावे .पोटात अंदाजाने २ भाग अन्नासाठी एक भाग पाण्यासाठी आणि एक भाग रिकामा ठेवणे अपेक्षित असते. पचनाच्या क्रियेत निर्माण होणाऱ्या वातासाठी हि जागा ठेवली नाही तर अन्न पचताना आमाशयावर या वातामुळे ताण येतो.यामुळे उचकी लागणे किंवा छातीत,पोटात दुखणे असे त्रास होतात
  10. भोजनानंतर लगेच शारीरिक कष्ट जसे जोरात चालणे ,पळणे ,तसेच झोपणे ,खूप बोलणे, उष्णेतच्या जवळ जाणे अथवा उन्हात जाणे,स्नान करणे या गोष्टी वर्ज्य आहेत.निदान ४५ मिनिटे ते १ तास या गोष्टी अवश्य टाळाव्या याने पचन क्रियेत बाधा येत नाही. या कालावधीत शरीरातील अग्नी किंवा सोप्या भाषेत रक्तपुरवठा हा पचनसंस्थेकडे असणे आवश्यक असतो.परंतु शारीरिक कष्टाच्या क्रिया केल्यास तोच अर्थातच हात पाय आणि हृदयाकडे वाढतो. त्यामुळे हृदयावर तर ताण येतोच शिवाय पचन क्रियेत हि बाधा येते. असे वारंवार झाले तर अनेक पचनाच्या व इतरही व्याधी जडतात.
    जेवणानंतर लगेच झोपल्याने कफदोष वाढतो आणि हृदयाचा रक्ताभिसरण वेग कमी झाल्यामुळे ,अन्न पचन क्रिया मंदावते.
  11. जेवताना चिंता,शोक,क्रोध,भीती,किळस आदी भाव मनात नसावे असा विशेष उल्लेख आयुर्वेदात आहे. मानसिक भावभावनांचा पचनावर अप्रत्यक्षरीत्या परिणाम होत असतो हे आता सर्वज्ञात आहे. अगदी हेच या विधानातून अभिप्रेत आहे.
  12. विरुद्धान्न ,असात्म्य (सवय नसलेले),प्रकृतीच्या विरुद्ध ,ऋतूला अनुकूल नसलेले अन्नसेवन टाळावे.

वर्षा ऋतू आणि आहार :
श्रावण आणि भाद्रपद म्हणजे जुलै शेवट ते सप्टेंबर सुरुवातीचा ऋतू हा वर्षा ऋतू होय.
वर्षा ऋतूत अग्निबल कमी असते. तसेच ह्या ऋतू मधील पाणी हे आम्ल विपाक असणारे म्हणजे पचायला जड आणि आंबटपणा उत्पन्न करणारे असते ह्या पाण्याचा फळे आणि भाज्यांवर परिणाम होतो.
शरीरातील वात दोष स्वभावतःच वाढलेला असतो म्हणूनच ह्या ऋतूंमध्ये हाडांचे दुखणे डोके वर काढते.जुने कधीतरी लागलेले ,आघात झालेले सांधे अथवा जखमेचे ठिकाण हि या मुळेच दुखते. आयुर्वेदातील बस्ती हा वातावरील सर्वोत्तम उपाय ह्याच ऋतू योजला जातो.

  • पावसाळ्यात पाणी हे पचायला जड असते म्हणून ते उकळवून प्यावे असा संकेत आहे. निर्जंतुकीकरण हा एक मुद्दा तर आहेच परंतु असे उकळलेले पाणी पचनसंस्थेवर चांगले काम करत असते .
  • अन्न पदार्थ नीट शिजवून उकडून मगच खावे.
    पावसाळ्यात पालेभाज्या खाल्ल्यास त्या पटकन बाधतात ,पोट बिघडवतात असे दिसते. याकरिता त्या वापरताना स्वच्छ धुवून नीट शिजवून मगच वापराव्या . कच्च्या शक्यतो या ऋतूत वापरू नयें. तसेच वेगवेगळ्या व्यंजनात त्या थोड्या प्रमाणात वापरणे चांगले.
    त्यातही पालक हि भाजी हमखास पित्त वाढवताना तसेच पोट बिघडवताना दिसते.
    राजगिरा ,लाल माठ, तांदुळजा मेथी ,चाकवत,अळू,अंबाडी अशा भाज्या खाव्यात.
  • सहज उपलब्ध फळे स्वच्छ करून खावीत .त्यातही डाळिंब,मोसंबी,केळी इत्यादी .
  • या ऋतूत जन्माष्टमी हा खास उत्सव असतो. त्यात प्रसादा करिता बनवला जाणारा गोपाळकाला एरवी संध्याकाळी खाण्यासाठी बनवला तरी उत्तम आहे.
    साळीच्या लाह्या,पोहे,काकडी,ओले नारळ आणि गोड़ दही वापरून बनवून अवश्य खावा. गोड आंबट तिखट रुचकर चवीचा हा आयुर्वेदिक कृष्णा स्पेशल आहार नक्की खावा असाच
  • रव्याच्या गूळ आणि खजुराच्या सारणाचा तुपावर भाजलेल्या सांजोऱ्या अथवा साठोऱ्या हा पदार्थ गोड़ व्यंजनामध्ये निवडणे हितकर.
  • ह्याच ऋतूत येणारी नारळी पौर्णिमा म्हणजे ओल्या नारळाचे ऋतूतील महत्व परत अधोरेखित करणारी.
    मधुर म्हणजे गोड़ चवीचे ओले नारळ पित्त आणि वाताचे छान शमन करते.
    बेदाणे केशर ओला नारळ घातलेला तुपातील नारळी भात ,नारळाच्या वड्या हि तर पर्वणीच.
  • ह्या ऋतूत मधुर (गोड़),लवण(खारट) आणि किंचित आम्ल(आंबट) चवी हितकर असतात.
    सैंधवाचा वापर ह्या ऋतूत आणि एरवीही अवश्य करावा.
  • गरम फळभाज्यांचे सूप, नॉन व्हेज सूप ह्या ऋतूत आवश्यक होय.परंतु मांसाहार अतिशय जपून अथवा टाळणे उत्तम
    लवंग दालचिनी,आले,सुंठ,गवती चहा, तुळस,ओवा,कढीपत्ता,हिंग यांचा विशेष वापर भूक वाढवी ,पचनशक्ती नीट ठेवणे या करता करून घ्यावा.
  • जुने साठे साळीचे तांदूळ, गहू आणि मूग मसूर डाळी ह्या ऋतूत उत्तम.
  • उसळीचा अतिरेक ह्या ऋतूत नकोच.
  • गौरी गणपतीला असणारा बेत, चव आणि आरोग्य सांभाळणारा असतो परंतु खाण्याचा अतिरेक आणि पचवण्याची ताकत नसेल तर सण समारंभात पोट बिघडणारच. तेंव्हा चवीला छान म्हणून प्रमाणाबाहेर खाणे टाळावे . परंतु स्वर्गीय अशा या पक्वांनांना न्याय आणि दाद द्यावीच.
    खोबरे खसखस गूळ,आणि साजूक तूप घालून उकडीचे किंवा तळणीचे मोदक हे कुठल्याही बाहेरच्या तयार मिठाईला उत्तम पर्याय होय आणि कायम च असावा.
    गौरी मध्ये केली जाणारी आदल्या दिवशीची मेथी , दुसऱ्या दिवशीची सोळा एकत्र भाज्यांची भाजी,अळूभाजी, कटाची आमटी किंवा सार ,अळूवडी ,वाटली डाळ, हिरवी चटणी,कोशिंबीर,साधे वरण भात पापड कुरडया आणि खमंग गुळाची तुपात भिजलेली पुरणपोळी हि खाद्यसंस्कृतीचा परमोच्च कळस साधत असते.
    त्या ऋतूत मिळणारया सगळ्या भाज्या वापरून आणि सर्व दोषांची काळजी घेऊन तयार झालेले हे ताट एक उत्तम आरोग्यदायी खाद्य परंपराच असते. गौरीच्या नैवैद्याला वऱ्हाडात ताक वापरून तयार केलेला ज्वारी बाजरी पिठाचा पातळसर आंबील हा पदार्थ सुद्धा ऋतूनुसार आंबट आणि गोड़ ह्याचा समतोल साधत असतो. असे आंबील एरवी खायला देखील रुचकर असते.
    सण,निसर्ग ,पदार्थांची रेलचेल यांमध्ये शरीराची स्थिती जाणून घेऊन खाणे आवश्यक हा अधोरेखित मुद्दा होय.
  • वर्षा ऋतूचे वर्णन कांदाभजी,बटाटा भजी शिवाय पूर्ण कसे होईल.अवश्य खा परंतु प्रमाणात खा. वारंवार आणि पोटास तडस लागेपर्यंत खाऊ नयें. तळणीचे तेल वारंवार गरम करून तेच सारखे वापरू नयें.
  • भजी करताना ओव्याचे पान ,ओवा घालून करावे.
  • वर्षासहल आणि भजे जोडी सलामत ठेवाच पण त्याबरोबर इतरही सात्म्य आणि उपकारक पदार्थ खा.

One blog every week, dedicated to the health,food, lifestyle wellness and Ayurveda , is what I am following religiously from almost 1.5 years now. The subject was never the issue.

So many things to pen yet and so many subjects ,topics requests pour in from readers everyday.

But today I  sat almost for two hour and couldn’t decide a single topic or could type a single word.A typical block I was experiencing in my mind. Music is always a solution in such situation for me.

Yes I  switched to it and read some beautiful poems,heard some great band’s tracks.

I came across some really sensitive,meaningful,disturbing but beautiful songs.

When its poem or song we always think of Rain,Love,beauty, nature,fun,relation ,heartbreak etc.

A tale of not so tonic ‘Tonic Water’!

It was an usual visit to the grocer. He has recently renovated his small grocery shop into a plush air conditioned supermarket. The product range too changed a lot with the shop.

While waiting in queue for bill, i was having a look in cart of next person. (Come on it was just a human natural trait and nothing more).

I saw some different cold drink cans in her cart.I just found the same bottles in nearby cabinets (image is attached with the blog). Initially I thought it as a new brand of any cold drink. Out of curiosity I look,read and found it as ‘Tonic Water’. Frankly I was not much aware of this thing, so got out of the queue and started reading it. Clearly written on can “contains Quinine” made me exclaim “WHAT?”. I clicked images for my references and thought to read more about it.

My husband too told me that in his USA office people buy large boxes of dozens of Tonic or carbonated water bottles and regularly drink them as normal water.

This blog is all about what I read and my concern and everybody should know it !

So what is Tonic water ?

If you think tonic means the water must be fortified with the things that will nourish our body, you are wrong just like me.

Just like any soda the tonic water too contains carbonated (Carbon di Oxide added) water , sugar and hold your breath Quinine. Yes you read right its Quinine. For those who doesn’t know what is Quinine, it is a potent medicinal drug used to treat the Malaria. The medicine has tremendous side effects and it is the last choice of doctors to treat malaria if other drugs fail.

Then for heaven’s sake why the tonic water contains Quinine? And what is it doing on my grocery shop shelves?

An interesting story!

In 1880s the tonic water containing very low dose of Quinine is discovered by the British people. It is used as the prophylaxis after the treatment of malaria.The British people used to carry it to their India visits to avoid the encounter to deadly Malaria which was epidemic that time.

Let me underline the point that the tonic water was supposed to use for medicinal purpose. The bitter taste was unpleasant, to make it easy to consume they start mixing Gin or other alcohol in it. Interesting right?

Everything seems interesting with alcohol, so obviously commercial interest started pouring in,in the tonic water.

The carbonated water with quinine later was added with various flavors and sugar. Among foods and drinks that are ingested solely for reasons of taste, tonic water is unique in that it was first and foremost a medicine. Since medicines tend to have side effects, is it possible that a hidden health risk is swirling around in tonic water. Today this is the only medicine which people use as regular mixer for the alcohol drink and various cocktails.

The whole thing is so strange.

  • The quinine though in very low dose has its own adverse effects on body.
  • The most common side effect is Thrombocytopenia (drop in platelet count in blood).The condition is called Gin and tonic purpura.
  • Quinine passes through placenta. So pregnancy is contraindication. But if the bottles are placed just like any cold drinks in grocery shops the chances get increased that anyone can just pick it up as cold drink. Anyways consumer is least bother to check the ingredients or what exactly they are consuming unless and until it is tasty. A scary fact but true unfortunately!
  • Allergy and sensitivity to quinine can trigger allergic reactions even in lower doses.
  • Other than quinine tonic water has almost all health hazards that soda has. Refer my previous article “Soda: A bubbly frizzy sweet addiction”

Global consumer market is playing with the health of their consumers. Ideally this Tonic water is not supposed to sell in grocery shops. It should be termed as drug and medicine category.

First of all an innocent question what is the problem with plain water?

Why do people need aerated water, cold drinks, sodas while eating? In my previous blogs too I mentioned that plain water is the best thing one can drink with their food.

My second and most important concern is what if consumer not at all aware of what she or he is drinking. The package, the taste, the purpose is just like soda or cold drinks. Imagine the danger, if like any soda the mother buys tonic cans and family, yes the child to consume it.The person next to me in queue i am little worried about her now.

If you are aware of the ingredients and still you are buying it the thing is different .It is personal choice but if innocents are consuming it without any knowledge of hazards. Time to think !

Pitta on fire : The alarming hyper acidity!

“After the fairness cream antacid tablets and syrups are the most hot selling products without the prescription or advise of the doctor.For many of people they are like regular pachak goli (digestive pill).Take the pill and eat whatever you want” 

Sorry to say folks , it doesn’t work. It gets worsen for sure.

Hyper acidity is the favorite condition of people. Many of us think that it is the condition to treat by ourselves. So many on counter antacids and so many home remedies available on fingertips to try out. I call such people “Homely doctorate in acidity”.

A very funny fact is that this condition becomes chronic. People themselves consider it a dangerous conditions, opt for many complicated investigations by themselves ,even enteroscopy which is most of the times is unnecessary. With huge report file and list of medicines tried on themselves finally they come to the right place.To the doctor, an Ayurveda clinic to be more specific.

Lets talk about hyper acidity or Aamlapitta in Ayurveda term. Trying to put the post in simplified points.

What is hyper acidity?

A condition where the digestive juice (Pitta dosha) which is supposed to digest the food without causing any harm to the body starts causing harm. The Pitta Dosha got vitiated by its quantity and quality causing various digestive impairments. The sour property of Pitta Dosha is increased abnormally . The condition is chronic and changes take place slowly over the period to show the symptoms later on body.

Reasons for hyper acidity :

  • Intake of too sour, too spicy food frequently.
  • Incompatible diet (mixing fruits and milk together ,eating non veg and milk products together etc.)
  • Diet opposite to the body type Eg. Pitta increasing diet by Pitta prakriti people.
  • Rotten, leftover, processed , too salty food.
  • Food intake too heavy to digest,too dry,  too liquid , burnt or cooked in high tempetrature.
  • Fermented food.
  • Habit of eating on irregular time or late, skipping meals and keeping fasts frequently.
  • Lack of sleep ,staying awake late at night, sleeping in day time after meal.
  • Smoking, alcohol , tobacco .
  • Psychological stress is also important cause of hyper acidity.
  • Some medicines like Antibiotics, Antidepressants and pain killers can also cause hyper acidity till you are on medicines .

Pre symptoms of hyper acidity:

  • Due to bad practice in lifestyle and food habits the body starts alarming us by showing some symptoms before the hyper acidity becomes chronic and more rooted. But we tend to ignore these symptoms .
  • The symptoms include reduced appetite, nausea and burning in throat after sometime of food intake. Do not ignore these early symptoms of hyper acidity.

Symptoms of hyper acidity:

  • Indigestion, nausea and vomiting after food intake, belching with strong sour or bitter taste of pitta,
  • Burning in throat,heaviness in stomach,pain in stomach ,headache,pain in chest region due to flatulence ,
  • Vommiting, sometimes loose motion,(symptoms relievs for sometimes after this)
  • Itching and rashes on skin in severe and chronic patients of Hyperacidity.
  • Giddiness and redness in eyes and buring of extremities .

These are some common symptoms of hyper acidity.

What happens with body when Pitta is vitiated? 

The wrong habits and reasons behind the hyper acidity increase the sour property of Pitta dosha. This altered Pitta cannot digest the food properly instead it remains in stomach in half digested fermented rotten state for long.

Indigestion causes the various symptoms. Now even if you try to shift your food habits and lifestyle to good the impairment of Pitta is still there.

Let me give you a simple example. When the milk is soured, the pot gets sour too. If you don’t wash that pot properly and still add some fresh milk in it , what will happen? Yes, the good milk will turn sour too.

The same way the system is already affected by the vitiated Pitta Dosha. It should be made free of the vitiated Dosha, then only the good food or lifestyle will show results.

Complication of untreated hyper acidity:

Improper nutrion ,Frequent loose motions,swlleing on body, nutritional disorders, Anemia,Vertigo, are some of the complications of untreated hyper acidity

Chronic hyper acidity further causes gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers and reflux esophagitis. (Inflammation and ulceration of inner wall of digestive track)

Management of hyper acidity:

  • Assessing the body type of patient and following  proper food and lifestyle is the key practice in the management of hyper acidity .
  • Ruling out the causes and avoiding them is the important solution.
  • Medicines and dos and don’t as suggested by the doctor.
  • Vamana and Virechana are the panchkarma therapies which are practiced to bring Pitta Dosha at its normal state.

As my readers know I never suggest or name medicines or home remedies in general articles. 

Any medicine, yes Ayurvedic too is not supposed to take on counter without doctor’s advice.

By doing this, you are helping the chemist to earn the money at your own health’s risk. Choice is yours.

So Ayurveda doctor will prescribe or give appropriate medicine for specific time to reduce the Pitta associated problems.

Dos n don’ts in hyper acidity:

  • Eat lunch and dinner earliest and on regular timings.
  • Avoid eating fullest of stomach.
  • Do not drink water or any liquid immediately before or after meal.
  • Avoid keeping stomach empty ,at the same time do not frequently munch on food too.
  • Do not keep awake late at night.
  • Easy regular excercises and yoga will imorove the digestion.

This is a digestion related disorder so what to eat and what not to is of prime importance.

Good food :

  • Food like yellow and green mung ,old red rice, wheat ,barley is good grain category in hyperacidity.
  • Boiled water for drinking has specific effect on reducing the hyperacidity as the heat makes water easy to assimilate.
  • Honey, lime water, unprocessed sugar (khadisakhar/patra sugar)cow milk, tender coconut ,pomegranate ,snake gourd, okra,pumpkin are advised to in diet frequently.
  • Use of dry ginger powder, cinnamon in food.
  • Shatavari kalp with milk.

Food to avoid:

  • Avoid spicy , leftover, overcooked food like barbequed kebab etc.
  • Thick gravies of onion , garlic and other hot spices.
  • Sour curd and its use with food for marination.
  • Cold drinks, aerated drinks, fermented food , bakery products,
  • Alcohol, smoking and tobacco .
  • Tea and coffee.
